The specialty of periodontics addresses the supporting structures of the teeth including gums and bones. Periodontitis occurs when the gums become irritated from exposure to toxins and plaque. When this condition progresses, the gums will retract from the teeth creating spaces known as periodontal pockets. These pockets become filled with tartar, bacteria and plaque allowing the condition to spread to the jaw and the connective tissues. Left untreated, this can lead to tooth loss.
Symptoms of gum disease include:
At Designer Family Dental, we understand the seriousness of gum disease. We offer a variety of periodontal services to restore oral health.
Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is an effective non-surgical treatment for early periodontitis. Scaling involves using specialized tools to remove plaque and tartar below the gum line. Next, we smooth the rough spots on the root surfaces (planing) to prevent future accumulations.
Gum Graft Surgery
When the gums recede, and roots become exposed, gum graft surgery can be used to repair this defect and prevent further recession. Gum grafts cover exposed roots and help develop new tissue where it is missing. This procedure involves removing tissue from the palate or another source and using it to cover the exposed root.
Dental Crown Lengthening
When gum disease occurs, oral tissue becomes swollen and inflamed. This can cause an unattractive, “gummy” smile. Dental crown lengthening can be used to fix this issue by removing gum tissue and exposing more of the natural tooth.
When scaling and root planing isn’t sufficient, but bone damage has not occurred, a gingivectomy can be used to remove and reshape loose, diseased gum tissue and eliminate pockets.
Other periodontal treatments we provide include Root Surface Debridement, Pocket Reduction, Osseous Surgery, Ridge Augmentation, Ridge Preservation, Regenerative Procedures, Sinus Lift and Bone Grafting.
